Dorris Woodrow “Woody” Smart, 95, of Austin (formerly of Greenville) passed away January 21, 2012 at Sagebrook Health Center in Cedar Park, Texas. Services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Hailes officiating. Interment will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park.
Mr. Smart was born May 12, 1916 in Ferris to Henry Clay and Frances Joan (Gardner) Smart. In 1941, he married Lillian Ruth Smith in Quinlan. Woody was a veteran of World War II. He began in Company C of the 144th Infantry Regiment in the Texas National Guard, which was inducted into Federal Service as part of the 36th Division on November 25, 1940. He ended in Troop A of the 23rd Calvary Reconnaissance Squardron Mechanized as part of the 16th Armored Division, which returned to the US on October 6, 1945. He was retired from A. T. & T. He was a member of The Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin and a former member of Park Street Baptist Church.
His survivors include his daughter Linda Lawrence and husband Fred of Austin; granddaughter Kimberly Ditty and husband Ted of Carrollton; grandson Nick Lawrence of Denton; sister Flora Lee Simmons of Sulphur Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife on January 19, 2005 and by one brother.
Pallbearers will be John David Bishop, Mark Dodson, Keith Smith, Scott Smith, Eric Smith, and Brian Smith.
