Bertha Irene Bench Cardwell arrived in Heaven in the early afternoon of October 31, 2011.  Services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday at Park Street Baptist Church.  Interment will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park.  Visitation will be from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

She started this long journey when she was born, on the Bench Farm in Hunt County, to Andrew and Mary Bench.

She dedicated her life to loving, caring and working for her God, family, friends, church and any other person or thing that needed her. She had a true servant’s heart, and we know that she is even now doing the same for her Heavenly Family and Her Savior.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Hal Cardwell; by a daughter Barbara Ann Sampson and son-in-law Paul Sampson; and two sons Glen Cardwell of Sudan Tx  and Jerry Cardwell of Greenville, Tx; and 20 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by five children, Bob Cardwell and wife Kay of Spring, Tx, Hallie Fish and husband Ernest of Lubbock, Tx, Grace McCormick of Amarillo, Tx, Jean Vieira of Greenville, Tx and Hal Cardwell and wife Dawn of Commerce, Tx ; two daughters-in-law Margaret Cardwell and Sue Cardwell.  She had 29 grandchildren and a multitude of great and great-great grandchildren.

She loved her church and church family at Park Street Baptist and in lieu of flowers would suggest a gift to Park Street Baptist Church or to your favorite charity.  She believed in helping others right up to the end.

"Your family is in our family's thoughts and prayers at Ms. Bertha's homecoming to be with the Lord.
Meeting Ms. Bertha led me to find a church home and be baptized in October of 2008.
I work at the local domestic violence shelter, and one day she came by to ask what the shelter needed because the Park Street Baptist WMU had chosen the shelter as their monthly mission project. I asked her which church she was with, and she invited my family and I to church that evening.
The day after Ms. Bertha went to be with the Lord, the Park Street WMU contacted me again to ask "What does the shelter need?""
