Betty Hawkins

Betty Kathryn Hawkins, 84, of Greenville, passed away December 26, 2016 in her bed peacefully.

She was born in Havana, Illinois on November 13, 1932 to Rudy and Mary Keith.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Marilyn and Kevin Wineinger and Sprite Spinks; grandchildren Raina Willick and husband Jason, Russell Spinks and wife Geline, Jill Weston and husband Mike, and Ray Spinks and wife Jess; great-grandchildren Hunter Weston, Tyler Weston and Juliana Willick.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 49 years, Robert M. Hawkins and first husband Howard Walker who died at a young age in service to our country.

As written in a Herald Banner newspaper article in 2001, Betty was a megavolunteer in Greenville.   She began her volunteer work when she moved here in 1976 and continued until her passing.

She began volunteering with GRO (Greenville Revitalization Organization) where she served on the first of many boards.  Her countless hours of volunteer work included the YMCA, Friends of the Library, Northeast Texas Library Systems Board, the City Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Crisis Line, Turn Around Greenville, United Way, Summer of Safety, Neighborhood Night Out, Drug Free Greenville Kite Fly, CLEAN Greenville (now Keep Greenville Beautiful), the Follies, and FISH (Hunt County Shared Ministries) for over 25 years.  She also volunteered as a Salvation Army bell ringer for over 25 years.

Betty enjoyed an active social life and played bridge regularly with several groups in town.  She was active in Newcomers Club and TOPS since 1976.  She developed many cherished friends in these groups.

All friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life that will be held at Landon Winery on Friday, December 30th, at 3 p.m.  It will not be a formal ceremony, but will be a chance for anyone to speak about her life, if they wish, as the microphone is passed.   Dessert and visiting will follow until 5 p.m.

Betty liked colorful attire, so you are welcome to wear that in her memory if you would like.

Donations can be made to our local food pantry, FISH (Hunt County Shared Ministries) at P.O. Box 124, Greenville, TX  75403.

Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

"I regret not speaking of Betty at her Celebration of Life. She was my neighbor and the first person in Greenville to introduce me to music venues she knew I'd find of interest. Through her I learned about the Dallas Symphony series, entertainment series, and the Follies, all if which have grown my quality of life in Greenville. She also introduced me to TOPS, an affordable way to lose weight. I turned her down on that offer at first, but nearly two years later I joined. I lost over 100 pounds, again greatly enhancing my quality of life. Some talk the talk while others walk the walk. Betty lived it. Betty was a wonderful woman. I shall miss her. We all will."
