Gemma Lappa Fort Worth, TX July 11, 2014
"Coach Guffey gave me my first high school coaching job. He had known me growing up and playing basketball against him while I was at Dodd City. He took a chance with me and gave me an opportunity. That man taught me so much about life let alone basketball. He taught me to be a compassionate person first and coach second. He showed me that being a coach/teacher is one of the most powerful and influential jobs there are and to never ever take for granted the kids you work with because everyone deserves a chance. I spoke to him off an on for the past 5 years since and he was always willing to listen and give input. I regret to say I haven't heard from him in a while... He will be greatly missed. His legacy will include more than what he did on the court because he touched the lives of everyone he encountered in a positive way. I am lucky to have gotten to know Coach Guffey. My thoughts go out to everyone who knew Coach Guffey. He will always be remembered."

"Though he didn't know me that well -- and our paths didn't cross that often -- Coach Guffey was always willing to help me when I needed something -- information, quotes, etc. -- for stories. The last time we talked, the converstaion ended with him telling me to feel free to call again if I needed anything else. He will be missed."
