Azalea Ruth Barker

On Monday, March 4, 2019, Azalea Ruth Barker went to be with her Savior.  At ninety years old, Ruth lived a long, full life and will be greatly missed by her loving family.

Ruth was a resident of Greenville, Texas, and a former resident of Garland.  She was born to Marvin Jake and Bonnie Ida DeFries on September 13, 1928 in Richardson, Texas.  They preceded her in death, along with her brother, Bill and her husband, Johnnie Eldon Barker.  He was the love of her life, and they walked side by side as they cherished fifty-seven years of marriage together.  She is survived by her daughter, Ginger, of Garland, and numerous nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Richardson High School, Ruth attended a local business college.  After devoting many years to the secretarial field, she left that behind to be a stay-at-home mother for her daughter.  She returned to the work force in 1978, and retired from the Garland Independent School District as assistant cafeteria manager at Walnut Glen Academy in 1990.

Ruth was a long-time member of White Rock United Methodist Church.  She had a passion for music, singing and enjoyed filling in from time to time as Song Leader for the worship service.  She and Johnnie treasured many years of fellowship, and wonderful pot-luck dinners, with their church family and neighbors at the White Rock Community Center.  Ruth was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Kappa Master, where she served as corresponding secretary and participated in various service projects to benefit the community and military.  She loved playing card games, listening to country music, having lunch at the Senior Citizen center with her friends and reading.  Ruth especially loved reading the Bible, and she lived her life according to God’s Word.

Ruth’s life will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019 at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel in Greenville, with the Rev. Steve Payne officiating.  Pallbearers will be David Brown, James DeFries, Jon Green, Ralph Green, John Hammerle and James Roberts, all nephews of the deceased.  Burial will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park.  The family will be hosting a visitation on Thursday, March 7, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, Ruth would be honored to have donations made to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation.  (
