Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ray Crumpton and Dr. James Ralson officiating. Interment will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
Born September 22, 1926 in Mt. Zion Community, Hopkins County, Texas, Martha was the daughter of Eula Swann Lindsey Parish, father James Hafford Lindsey and step-father Foy Parish. On October 28, 1944, she married Billy Gene Pope in Greenville. They had two daughters Martha Gene Pope born August 14, 1945 and died April 7, 1946 and
Suzan Elaine Pope born November 17, 1949.
Martha worked in the family business, Billy’s Produce Wholesale Fruits and Vegetables, for many years until retirement in 1988. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, also known as Nanny. She enjoyed and loved her family. After retiring, she and her husband spent many years in her adoptive state
Colorado camping, four wheeling throughout the mountains looking for bears, and enjoying the beautiful mountains’ wild flowers. She also lived in the Perryville Community near Winnsboro after retiring from the family business and later returned to Greenville for her remaining years.
She had a great love for the Lord and was always an example of what the Bible says a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother should be – a Proverbs 31 woman. She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School and worked many years with youth groups at Washington Street Baptist Church (now Highland Terrace Baptist Church) and First Baptist Church of Campbell.
Her survivors include her daughter Suzan Elaine Pope Chaffin and husband Benny Kit Chaffin of Campbell; grandchildren Machelle Riley and husband Mike and sons Brandon and Christopher, Angie Money and husband Daren and son Kaleb and daughter Sarah, Ryan Chaffin and wife Katherine and sons Sean and Seth, and Billy Peek and wife Laura and son Dalton; sisters Maurine Clark of Greenville, Georgia White and husband Charles of Houston, Freeda Crumpton Brewer and husband Gene of Greenville and Ann Crumpton and husband Ray of Cumby; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, infant daughter, mother, father, step-father, and brothers-in-law Murray Crumpton and Cecil Clark.
Mike Riley, Ryan Chaffin, Daren Money, Billy Peek, David Pope, Jerry Pope, and Leon Pope will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be James Morgan, Lee Murrell, Charles White, Norris Nix, Ivan Gustin, and Frankie Morris.
The family request memorials be made to the Mary Hill Davis Mission Offering, c/o Shady Grove Baptist Church, 3507 FM 499, Greenville, TX 75401.
